Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is located at the southwest corner of Canada and the northwest corner of the United States.  The 290 mile (460 kilometer) long island lies in an area of high tectonic activity and has been home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Europeans arrived in the late 1700's and the island became an important location for trade and commerce in natural resources, mining, and eventually technology.

The island is rich in ecology. The environment transistions through many different ecotypes: from maritime through temperate rainforest and up to the peaks of the central mountains
